HandsOn Suburban Chicago & London Middle School in Wheeling Launch School Garden

AmeriCorps VISTAS from HandsOn Suburban Chicago take a break from gardening.

On April 10th, ground was broken at London Middle School in Community Consolidate District 21 for a school vegetable garden.

A total of 69 volunteers, 19 community volunteers, staff and parents plus 50 students built four raised vegetable beds in the school’s interior courtyard. The Wheeling Garden Club also participated and provided planning resources and preliminary consultations were made by SmartFarms of Barrington.

School staff are already busy planning future uses of the garden with ideas ranging from science ecology projects to cooking and garden clubs.

The next phase involves planting the raised beds and individual classrooms will be working the tying the planting to specific curriculum.

Local businesses and community members are encouraged to participate as this program. If you are interested in donating funds for supplies or pitching in throughout the Summer, please contact Patty Neuswanger at schoolresources@volunteerinfo.net
