The Canine Comfort Shop (CCC) is an e-commerce company that provides dog owners with comfortable, and comforting, sleeping solutions for their canine companions. CCC was started two years ago by Cynthia Kirk with her signature Over-Tray Crate Pad Set, when her search to find a pad that worked well with standard dog crates was unsuccessful. Her idea was to find a pad that fit the firm plastic tray that comes in wire crates and would be more functional than a throw rug or old towel. Like most puppies, Kirk’s enjoyed first pulling on, and finally destroying, loose or protruding pieces of anything he found. Just a tray pad did not solve the problem. A cover that went around the tray with the pad inside, and with no exposed fasteners or zippers, finally worked.

Kirk found that her dog no longer dug at a loose blanket or mat to get comfortable since her custom design kept the case in place. The surprise bonus came when he fell asleep within a few minutes the first afternoon he had his Over-Tray Crate Pad set. He slept more soundly at night and only stirred occasionally to change positions. Other dog owners found the same results with Kirk’s innovative products, and the CCC was born.

Mike Boehler had the pleasure of interviewing Cynthia Kirk, owner of Canine Comfort Shop, in Naperville, IL.
Boehler: What is Canine Comfort Shop and what products are available?
Kirk: For those people who embrace the concept of crating our dogs, out of necessity or preference, our focus is to provide a comfortable place for the animal, as opposed to throwing some lumped up towel or area rug in the plastic tray. We provide a pad that lies in and fills up the tray, which also has a case that goes around the outside of that tray. It keeps the pad flat and all the seams, zippers and everything the dog likes to pull on are tucked under the rim of the tray, so they don’t have opportunities for pulling, tearing and chewing where he/she can’t get to it, but still have it be décor friendly.
Another unique product we offer are the Anywhere Pads that can be utilized indoors or outdoors, on any hard surface. Anywhere Pads are especially designed for older and larger dogs with joint problems or arthritis. They provide a comfortable place to lie or sleep and health benefits for pets.
Boehler: Who are your customers?
Kirk: Anyone who owns pets that are part of the family, are concerned about their pets’ health, and who crate them out of preference or necessity (necessity being owners who live in high-rise apartment buildings who are required to crate their pets when they are out).
Boehler: What makes Canine Comfort Shop’s products unique?
Kirk: One of our functional products is a uniquely designed pad that lies in the crate tray and has a case that goes around the outside of that tray. This keeps the pad flat and in one unit. All of the seams, zippers and everything the dog might like to pull on are tucked under the rim of the tray, where he/she can’t get to it, so there aren’t opportunities for pulling, tearing and chewing. This protects both the pad and the pet’s health and safety.
Many different versions are available. All of them tuck under the rim and are zippered, so the covers can be removed, allowing the 2 layers (a muslin cover as well as a decorative cover) to be washed independently.
The crate pads have 20 different standard sizes to accommodate different sizes of crates and can be made custom for the crate they already have, regardless of size. We also provide a variety of different fabrics to coordinate with many decors and seasons.
We also offer functional Anywhere Pads that can utilized indoors/outdoors, or on any hard surface, especially for older and larger dogs with joint problems or arthritis.
These also include 2 layers that can be unzipped and washed. The Anywhere Pads can also be hinged to carry easily with handles and can be fastened together. They are very lightweight to go and fit almost anywhere, like in the cargo bay in back of a SUV. They also slide under almost anything to store and can be collapsed into a tidy little stack, saving space.
Boehler: How long have you been in business and where are your products available?
Kirk: We are a new web-based business with products available anywhere in the United States. Our website went live about 3 months ago. Customers just need to simply go to the website (www.caninecomfortshop.com) and pick a product, a size and fabric. All of our products are delivered via UPS.
Boehler: What are message would you like to share with our readers?
Kirk: People who know the benefits of a dog being in a crate will be pleasantly surprised with my focus and products, which are designed to make pets comfortable in their safe zone. My products are easy to care for, are decor friendly and also provide comfort and health benefits.
