Inside of you is an “All Powerful King” who is capable of making all of your dreams come true. Whatever you tell him you want with purpose and conviction he will make happen in your life. He has that much power and he resides inside of you right now even as you are reading this article however you must be very careful because he takes whatever you tell him literally, good or bad. So be careful of what you tell him want. He believes what you tell him to be true, even when it isn’t and he can make bad things happen just as well as good things. Good or bad whatever he produces for you he believes it is the right thing for you. He takes everything you say literally.

Does that sound like a fantasy or a crazy story? It isn’t. I am talking about your subconscious mind and what I have described to you is exactly how it works, whether you believe it or not. Very little of what we do we do is at a conscious level. Neuroscientist now know that only about 10% of what we do is at a conscious level and 90% is subconscious. Your subconscious mind controls every aspect and function of your body and mind. Your heart beating right now, the breath you just took, every chemical and hormone being released and used in your body right now is being controlled by your subconscious mind. If you think about it, you will realize how amazing that really is.

Many times the reason you seem to have such a hard time letting go of bad habits is you try to change them at a conscious level and that doesn’t work. Your subconscious mind believes the bad habit is actually good for you and will at some point override your conscious mind. It is how you can rationalize or make excuses for your bad habit. It is the reason for so many years I would lose 50 or 100+ pounds and then I would put the weight back on, even though I didn’t want to. My subconscious mind perceived me as being fat and that being fat was a good thing, even though that sound crazy. That is how you get stuck in such negative patterns in your life and can’t seem to change them.

So, how do you change these negative images and beliefs you have about yourself? Long term change almost never happens at a conscious level. It has to happen at a subconscious level first and then it becomes part of our conscious reality. When I changed the perception of myself from being fat to being thin, then I was able to change myself physically. Change happens from the inside out not the outside in. You have to change the movie that is running all day long inside your head. Your homework today will help you do that and it is simple, easy and fun to do.

Your Daily Homework

Do this exercise every night as you go to sleep.

As you are laying in bed ready to fall asleep close your eyes and visualize exactly how you want your life to be. See it in great detail. Hear the sounds you would hear if it were real and feel all the emotions you would feel. Then fall asleep on that visualization. All night long your subconscious mind will be working on that image you created and as you do it more and more you will begin to make adjustments in your habits , values and beliefs. It is simple and it is very powerful and overtime it can change your life! In Napoleon Hill’s classic book on success, “Think and Grow Rich” he discovered that the most successful people in the world did this every night as they were going to sleep. People like Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Alexander Graham Bell, The Wright Brothers and many more did this powerful exercise

So do the exercise every night. You area going to go to sleep anyway and the exercise requires no additional time from your day. How great is that? You are amazing, so do things that help you discover how amazing you are.

People are always looking to the “Secret” to success, that “Magic Pill” that will transform you into something great! The success you want can be anything; losing weight, growing your business, being a great partner or parent, anything. So, where is that “Magic Key” where do you find it and why is it being hidden from you? They say the greatest place to hide something is right under a person’s nose and that is exactly where the key to your success is. The key to your success, all your success is already inside of you. Every resource and skill you need to be successful; confidence, discipline, hard work and all the others, you are already using in some area of your life, you may not even be aware of it. Once you become aware of those skills in your mind, you can move them over to the other areas of your life to accomplish all you dreams.

Here is an example: I had a client once in her late forties. She came to me because she claimed that all her life she had no confidence or self-esteem. She had been telling herself this all her life. I noticed that when she was telling me her story of despair, she was sitting tall and erect, she was projecting her voice with power and force and her body language was very commanding. She was telling how little confidence she had, very confidently. I told her that and she didn’t want to believe me and she became even more forceful and more sure of her story of no confidence. I had her freeze and look at her body language, her voice and her words. It was the first time in her life that she made the connection to herself, that she really did have self confidence. Once she made that connection all she needed to do was move confidence she had in telling her story to the other areas of her life. She was able to do that and she is now a very successful salesperson and has taken back her power in all the areas of her life.

So how do you capture your powerful success skills you already have and apply them to the other areas of your life? The exercise below will show you how to do that.

Homework Exercise

“Circle of Power”

Close your eyes and remember at time in your life when you were successful doing something (it could be anything) or something that you know you do really well. Now explore it: see the things you see while doing it, hear the things you hear while doing it and feel the things you feel while doing.

Now imagine a circle on the floor in front of you big enough so you can step in it.

Take all the skills, resources and feelings you are experiencing doing this thing you do well (successfully) and take all those things and put them into that circle. You will notice that the circle will change color and you will begin to feel its powerful energy of your success traits coming from it.

Now step into the circle and feel all of your success from that thing you do well. See that way again, hear that way again and feel that way again. You will notice how different you feel. Standing taller, more focused in thought and confident in your ability.

Every time you need your success, power, strength and confidence…Close your eyes imagine that circle in front of you again, it beautiful color and powerful energy and then step into it. You will feel that way again and experience your success….Because….You are Amazing!!!

Make the choice

Reach out for help

Make time for grief

Reactive vs Proactive coping – what are you reacting to and what can you take control over?

Take conscious ownership of your healing journey

Favorite Quotes from this Interview:

“Creating a routine give you a sense of control when there is so much that you can’t control.”

“When you’re widowed at a chronologically younger age you have different issues than someone who is widowed at an older age. It’s not harder, the issues are different.”

“I had the opportunity to model for my 11 year old daughter that we could get knocked down hard and that we could get back up.”

“Death makes everybody uncomfortable, talking about it, dealing with it, acknowledging it. And the fact is that if we don’t talk about it, death is not going to go away.”

All day long we talk to ourselves. Are you even aware of that and what you say to yourself? Most of us aren’t. Yet at least several hundreds times a day we say things, comment, compliment, criticize and sometimes put ourselves down. The conversations we have in our head are important. They help define who we are and what we are? They are an important part of creating the self-image we have about ourselves. Unfortunately, if you are not aware of your self talk then most of it is probably negative. You know what I am talking about, you are doing something and you make a mistake and the little voice in your mind says to you, “How could you be so stupid?”. This self talk and commentary we have is happening all day long and until you become aware of it, you can’t change it. We become what we say to ourselves all the time. So if we are saying negative things to ourselves, our lives most likely reflect that. Where did it come from? Many times it comes from our childhood, growing up. We hear things like; Your… Stupid…Dumb…To Fat…Ugly…Not Good Enough…Worthless…Unlovable…and there are many more. Our subconscious minds are very powerful and if you tell it something enough times, it will believe that it is true…even when it isn’t. When we hear those negative words enough times, we start acting that way and the world starts treating us that way. Fortunately, if we say great things about ourselves over and over, we believe that we are great and the world treats us that way. Positive or negative either one is and can become your reality.

How do we change our self talk? The first step is to become aware of it. You cannot change anything that you are not aware of. Being aware of who you are, what you are and what you think are the most powerful tools of change. Without them you are forever destined to live the current life you are living. Today’s Success Homework will allow you to become; awake and aware of your internal dialogue and then be able to change it. What should you be saying to yourself? Look at the picture in this article, “Strength” read the words surrounding it, those are great examples of what you should be saying to yourself, all day long, everyday. You are Amazing…accept that about yourself.

Your Success Homework

Every time you catch yourself saying something negative to yourself, freeze, stop what you are doing and repeat these words: CANCEL, CANCEL, CANCEL…and then replace your negative statement with a positive one. Here is an example: You make a mistake doing something and you say to yourself “Am I stupid”….Freeze…say: CANCEL, CANCEL, CANCEL…”I am learning new things everyday and getting wiser”. Does that sound simple, it is. At first you will not catch yourself that much because you are not that aware of your thoughts. Soon you will be aware and you will be “cancelling” yourself all day long. Eventually you negative self talk will subside and you will think more positively and you will be “cancelling” yourself less and less.

Now throw in autism or another developmental challenge and it’s like giving a pyromaniac a box of matches to play with in a room full of high explosives.

My then 13 year old son (who is on the autism spectrum) had a glorious transition from a special needs school to public middle school (his choice) and exceeded everyone’s expectations in terms of keeping up with the increased course load and managing the chaos of changing classes with loud crowded hallways etc, or so we thought.

Over a period of a few weeks his attitude began deteriorating. He was becoming more moody, bossy to his brothers, and increasingly isolated. He became inflexibly obsessed with a new video game system he was saving for and became extremely depressed when told we wouldn’t give him the remaining money to buy it.

Now I suspect some of you are saying, “So what’s unusual about a spectrumite (child on the autism spectrum) being moody and obsessed with video games?”

What’s different is that it intensified in a short time and he was unable to bounce back from being told “No” as he’s been able to in the past. Instead he sunk even lower. One night it peaked when I found him at bedtime curled up in tears after having locked himself in his room for several hours.

Time To Strap In

He was so distraught that it wasn’t easy getting him to talk about what was upsetting him. He kept saying no one understands him, even me (this was a shocking statement as he typically referred to me as the only person who does).

He repeatedly said, “No one knows how to work with me,” “No one understands me” “I’m confused about school, life and everything.” He shook even more as he talked and I wasn’t sure where this would lead but I prepared myself for a long night. I can’t remember exactly how the dialogue went but I concentrated on his every word to look for clues that could guide me in helping him.

I pointed out his repeated use of words such as “nobody,” “everyone,” “24/7″ and other all or nothing phrases that created this perception of complete isolation from anything that was working for him. His use of words prevented him from seeing options because this type of thinking doesn’t allow for any.

I explored with him the things he felt “no one” was getting or helping with and what he absolutely needed them to know and understand. I asked him this question being fully prepared to in no way minimize whatever statement came out of his mouth. I was asking him to trust me to be an exception to his “nobody” belief and I wasn’t going to blow it.

The Bottom Of It

When I was finally able to reassure him that it was him and me, that he wasn’t alone, and that we would find a solution, is when he finally opened up about what was upsetting him. He said he really enjoyed the teachers and the classes but the busy halls and all the students were too much for him to handle.

He had transitioned from a school in which he moved between two classrooms with a total of ten students, to a school of about one thousand students in which he was in nine different class periods, with up to thirty-six kids in a class and so on.

He seemed like Iron Man in terms of how he appeared to be navigating this environment so well. With all of my sensory sensitivities and what I knew of his I had no idea how he was doing it. So I asked him why he had been keeping this to himself for so long. Please note this following statement because it is critical for you to understand.

He said, “Everyone was so proud of me that I didn’t want to disappoint you.” I felt the energy drain out of me when he said that as I felt I might have sent a signal to him I never meant to send. So I told him, “I want you to know that I’m deeply sorry if I ever gave you the impression that my being proud of you was something you had to earn.”

I added that each time he asked more of himself I was proud of him because he took that step. I let him know that the step was what was important. Not every step is going to give us the result we want. Many experiences teach us that the step we took is one that we don’t want to repeat, while others leave us glad we did. It’s the courage he showed in taking the step that made me proud of him.

The Lesson
Further discussion revealed that:

• He believed he’d be sent back to the special needs school if he didn’t adjust perfectly to the middle school.

• Each time he succeeded we (his parents) and school staff, told him how proud they were of him. He believed the pride to be attached to the accomplishment and if he discovered it wasn’t working and wanted to change it the pride would vanish.

• He also kept taking on more responsibilities and joining more clubs so he could keep hearing, “I’m proud of you.” He did this until he couldn’t do it anymore.

• His obsession with the video game, the computer etc (all of which he’d been grounded from for the way he was acting) he revealed, are the methods he used to drown out the negative thoughts he was having about how bad he felt. Taking them away removed his coping mechanism, which escalated things. However, if we hadn’t taken them away who knows if and when the truth would have bubbled to the surface.

Over the weeks leading to this moment we watched his ability to sustain this win-lose situation deteriorate. I really have to hand it to the staff that worked with him on a daily basis and had consistently been there for him. He said, “The teachers and counselors are the reason I don’t freak out every day.”

We discussed how the middle school was about him getting an education, it wasn’t about tolerating noisy, crowded hallways and dealing with jerks at the lunchroom table. None of those were measures of success.

As he began to calm I asked him if he felt calmer and he said, “Yes.” I asked him if he understood things differently. He talked about how he realized things seemed different when he talked about them instead of keeping them in. Essentially, putting words to his experience helped make it more clear so it could be looked at and thought through.
Once he was smiling again and ready to go to bed I asked him what he learned from our discussion. He said, “To do what makes me happy.” I added, “It’s also important that you never feel you are responsible for making yourself unhappy in order to make others happy.”

The following morning was a brand new day in a whole new way.

Brian R King

As a cancer survivor, adult with Dyslexia, A.D.D., the father of three sons on the autism spectrum as well as someone who lives on the autism spectrum myself, I’ve learned something very critical. That success in life has nothing to do with circumstances but everything to do with strategies.

I’ve learned that Fear and Excitement are the same feeling, the difference being whether you decide the feeling means that “I can’t” or that “I’m ready!”

I’ve become a master of turning Problems into Possibilities and Obstacles into Opportunities and I’ve learned to teach my clients to do the same thing using what I refer to as “The Effective Factor.” A laser focused ability to make small shifts that create massive results in every area of your life.

I look forward to serving you,

Our founding fathers recognized the importance of having citizen politicians. Citizen politicians defined over 237 years ago as people who participate in the political process, and these people come from all walks of life, such as farmers, businesses, law practices, inn keepers, chimney sweepers and schoolteachers.

These citizen politicians participated in the people’s government result in fresh new realist practical ideas from the communities they live in. These ideas coming from the community bringing reality and cultural inspiration based on real world experiences. These citizen politicians representing the people’s government and after their politicking is done they simply travel home to their citizens lives once again.

What is deeply saddening is the evolutionary process of the professional politician, who’s only goal in life is to stay in that elected seat full-time and forever. Without ever relinquishing this position resulting in stagnant ideas, with no possible sense of connection to the real people that elected them. In addition, a lack of connection to any sense of reality at all, these professional politicians are more closely aligned to an elitist mindset nowhere grounded to the community they are supposed to represent.

Political elitists have no direct correlation to the citizens that they represent, in most cases these professional politicians are not even from the same state. The only reason that these professional politicians are there, is because a great deal of money is now made for being a professional politician. Our founding fathers never intended to make citizens full-time politicians, or they would have written term-limits into the constitution for all elected officials from dogcatcher to the president.

Instead, what we have today a professional politician with no real connection back to the community that they represent, and what happens is “we the people” cease to exist.” “We the people” today are no longer the foundation for this government, and we the people have become merely three words in the English language.

“STEM Fields” Talent Shortage; How the United States can regain its competitiveness in math- and science-related fields. Career College Central Magazine, September 2012

For the past 100 years, technological innovations in science and engineering have fueled the U.S. economy, produced good jobs and an extraordinary standard of living, and established the United States as an international economic leader. Our nation’s international segment of industries focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), though, is in profound decline, as documented in the “Science and Engineering Indicators: 2012″ study by the National Science Board. The study concludes that STEM education and entrepreneurial thinking has taken a back seat to empirical learning, resulting in a decline in good jobs. “We do not have nearly enough people who are capable in the STEM fields: science, technology, engineering and math,” said Margaret Spellings, former U.S. Secretary of Education from 2005 to 2009.

The U.S. economy relies heavily on jobs resulting from innovation. This makes selecting the means How the United States can regain its competitiveness in math- and science-related fields to ensure the sustained growth of the U.S. economy and job creating industries paramount. Job-creating industries are dependent on the nation’s college graduates being trained to decipher, understand, and identify industry solutions from historical case studies. Case studies correlating to present-day educational obstacles can provide a heads-up display for market changes, diversity of markets, and the ability to adapt to markets with a historical perspective. Having a strong focus on STEM fields reduces the talent shortage and increases learning from past education mistakes.

In the last 20 years, the skills needed for employment have become more technology related. This requires workers to have stronger backgrounds in science and engineering. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that the number of workers in science and engineering occupations grew by nearly 800 percent between 1950 and 2000. Our nation has a thirst for STEM occupations, which is revealed in the lower unemployment statistics of STEM graduates.

Here is the big problem: The cost of waiting for old ideas to catch up with modern job-creation practices obstructs new market opportunities. Such obstructions represent a stream of wasteful practices, making it difficult to be competitive in today’s volatile markets. The loss of competitiveness results in lost work and higher unemployment statistics. According to U.S. Department of Labor information cited in the 2012 CNN Money article “The 86 Million Invisible Unemployed,” 86 million people without jobs have simply given up looking for a job. How do we bring together our combined academic experiences and industry expertise to reverse this serious educational trend? The talent solutions will come from colleges and universities that move quickly to embrace STEM education concepts, neither tolerating nor accepting limits set by bureaucratic regulations. Teachers are ready to make such change. With quick changes to curricula that encourage and promote STEM fields, the value of such an education can inspire students in K-12.

“By taking on teaching and school counselor roles, STEM educated graduates from our nation’s teaching colleges and universities become the compulsory inspiration for our young people.”

New K-12 teachers and school counselors become the natural first line of observation. STEM practitioners become vital to identifying students with a gift for the sciences. The secret sauce is in stimulating learning in students who do not know they have the ability to excel in STEM fields. These students have the strongest probability for success and become future job creators and industry leaders.

Educated teachers and school counselors in STEM can help students develop their own learning experiences and science skill sets. New experiences and skill sets become the bedrock of goal setting early in a student’s educational journey. In the pyramid design, we begin with the foundation of knowledge experienced through the empirical learning of teachers and school counselors.

The modern-day assessment tool that can easily be adapted to test the necessities of K-12 is called the Prior Learning Assessment. PLA is an important strategy for helping students progress toward higher education. Understanding a student’s prior learning is similar to adding a turbine supercharger to a four-cylinder education engine. After reviewing data collected from 62,475 students at 48 postsecondary institutions in a PLA study, the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) shows that PLA students have better academic outcomes.

Climbing higher up the pyramid is a next-level opportunity to stimulate K-12 learning by concentrating on the combined strengths of parent involvement (PI) and interactive methodology (IM). A Need for More Role Models?” in the Journal of College Science Teaching, PI is the ultimate role model.

Students will enjoy learning and be motivated to learn if they are taught by a motivated role model who is of great influence to the student, such as a parent. Teachers and school counselors who encourage PI are more likely to receive the respect of both the student and parents. PI is significant because, as the education process continues, students gain confidence in discussing science with others long after school dismissal in the best learning environment – their homes. The final pyramid step is technology or IM – the ultimate evolutionary process. IM combines every level of technology that is available to the student in the school and home environments. Advancing a student’s sensory ability by using methodology fueled by technology stimulates levels of importance associated with STEM learning. IM becomes the natural byproduct and lowest common denominator linking STEM educators, researchers and students, establishing unlimited inspirational learning. Each level of learning becomes more exciting than the previous.

As seen above, the pyramid design has a foundation in STEM educated teachers and school counselors, who are trained with a robust student assessment process that aims for understanding a student’s prior learning. Including PI and adapting to IM are also vital. Using this model, we have a fighting chance with the benefits of STEM education and entrepreneurial thinking, resulting in a culture prepared to create good jobs.

Meet Toni Hoy, a long time foster-adoptive parent, lives in the Chicago area.
Her book, Second Time Foster Child is the story of a boy who was forced into foster care, to access treatment for disorders that resulted from the pre-adoptive trauma, which brought him into foster care as an infant. It’s a story of a child who was separated from the only family he remembers in exchange for treatment of severe emotional disorders. His parents, charged with neglect in exchange for his treatment, subsequently battled the state to unravel the injustices inflicted upon them by child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Second Time Foster Child links parents locked into a custody relinquishment nightmare with other historically oppressed peoples. Child welfare attorneys, judges, and child welfare professionals will gain understanding of the parents’ perspective of a no-fault dependency case.

Daniel received a forever family when his foster family made a lifetime commitment to him through adoption. Daniel’s permanency was disrupted when the state denied every funding source for his severe emotional disorders, forcing him once again, back into foster care.

His family grieved as they made the Devil’s Deal with the state, trading custody rights for treatment in order to give Daniel his only chance at emotional stability. Facing legal prosecution, while enduring personal persecution and oppression, his mother unscrambles federal laws, re-approaches the state, and fights back to regain the custody they never should have lost.

Key selling points of Second Time Foster Child
· Identifies the importance of adoption preservation
· Exposes the stigma associated with mental illness
· Reveals the disparity between mental illness and physical illness
· Stresses the importance of medically necessary funding
· Gives scope to the barbaric practice of custody relinquishment for mental healthcare

· About the author: As a leading child mental health advocate, Toni Hoy has made presentations before state departments and legislators. Safeco Insurance recently selected Toni as the “Community Hero” with an award for her advocacy efforts and a monetary grant for NAMI. Toni was interviewed on WORT’s radio program, “Healthwriter” and KKSF 910 Newstalk radio, and has authored articles for the Family Defense Center newsletter and Rise Magazine as a free-lance writer. She chairs the Children’s Advocacy Committee for NAMI Barrington Area affiliate, where she serves as a board member. In addition, she authors a regular column for the NAMI Barrington Area newsletter called “In the Trench” and facilitates a family support group. She earned a B.A. in Communications from Thomas Edison State College and was a recipient of the Arnold Fletcher Award for academic excellence. She is married and has four children.
