Our founding fathers recognized the importance of having citizen politicians. Citizen politicians defined over 237 years ago as people who participate in the political process, and these people come from all walks of life, such as farmers, businesses, law practices, inn keepers, chimney sweepers and schoolteachers.

These citizen politicians participated in the people’s government result in fresh new realist practical ideas from the communities they live in. These ideas coming from the community bringing reality and cultural inspiration based on real world experiences. These citizen politicians representing the people’s government and after their politicking is done they simply travel home to their citizens lives once again.

What is deeply saddening is the evolutionary process of the professional politician, who’s only goal in life is to stay in that elected seat full-time and forever. Without ever relinquishing this position resulting in stagnant ideas, with no possible sense of connection to the real people that elected them. In addition, a lack of connection to any sense of reality at all, these professional politicians are more closely aligned to an elitist mindset nowhere grounded to the community they are supposed to represent.

Political elitists have no direct correlation to the citizens that they represent, in most cases these professional politicians are not even from the same state. The only reason that these professional politicians are there, is because a great deal of money is now made for being a professional politician. Our founding fathers never intended to make citizens full-time politicians, or they would have written term-limits into the constitution for all elected officials from dogcatcher to the president.

Instead, what we have today a professional politician with no real connection back to the community that they represent, and what happens is “we the people” cease to exist.” “We the people” today are no longer the foundation for this government, and we the people have become merely three words in the English language.

Join Dr. Pete, Friday, 12/28 at 11:30 am, as he discusses “STEM Fields” Talent Shortage; How the United States can regain its competitiveness in math-and science-related fields.

For the past 100 years, technological innovations in science and engineering have fueled the U.S. economy, produced good jobs and an extraordinary standard of living, and established the United States as an international economic leader.

Our nation’s international segment of industries focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), though, is in profound decline. STEM education and entrepreneurial thinking has taken a back seat to empirical learning, resulting in a decline in good jobs, and here we are.

Here is the big problem: The cost of waiting for old ideas to catch up with modern job-creation practices obstructs new market opportunities. Such obstructions represent a stream of wasteful practices, making it difficult to be competitive in today’s volatile markets. The loss of competitiveness results in lost work and higher unemployment statistics.

Dr. Pete shares with you the pyramid designed STEM education solutions, tune in and learn more!

Segueway to Success - The Changing OEM Model – Made in the USA?

By Tom Kuchan

Historically, recessions in the United States have tended to originate in the manufacturing sector. Each school of economic thought, Keynesians, Monetarists, Austrians, etc., have their own theories as to why it happens but regardless of the “why” the “where” has been fairly consistent. This last recession however was different.

Starting in the financial sector with the collapse of the mortgage market and the billions of dollars worth of mortgage backed securities attendant to it, the collapse in manufacturing became an unconventional lagging participant in the collapse. Soon, however, manufacturing found itself deeply wounded and it remains so today.

Consider some statistics. According to the US Department of Labor, manufacturing jobs are still down more than 2 million since the beginning of 2007. The U.S. Census Department has plant utilization at 73.1% through Sept. 30, 2012. The global manufacturing survey firm Markit reported just this week that U.S. manufacturing barely grew in the third quarter and showed statistically no improvement over the previous quarter. Pick 50 other measures and you will get 50 other pieces of discouraging news.

As we turn our attention to the imminent election and the changes that may, or may not, come from it, one of the concerns in manufacturing is how easy will it be for manufacturers to rebound if and when the economy starts to turn around? One of the likely consequences in having had this recession start in the financial sector and having had banks publicly blamed for causing it is that bank lending, in all forms not just residential, is unlikely to quickly return to pre-recession levels. This means that manufacturing industry access to the financial leverage needed to ramp back up will not be available the way it has been during past recoveries.

Also, foreign manufacturing competition is an ever growing factor. A recent project conducted with a high school class which Segueway principals mentor involved studying the production and sale of school desks. Research by the students determined that while numerous U.S. based companies sell desks to high schools, very few desks are actually made in the United States. China and Taiwan were the primary sources. This repeats itself across a broad spectrum of products which further hampers U.S. manufacturing.

What is the answer? One possibility lies in what we’ll call the Reeses’ Manufacturing Paradigm; sticking foreign manufacturing peanut butter in American product chocolate. U.S. manufacturers supplying component parts to larger manufacturers or assemblers can keep their OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) status, their patents and their customers while taking advantage of lower cost foreign production. In this scenario the American OEM turns into a slightly glorified reseller of its own design. The product is made overseas to the specifications of the U.S. OEM and is then transferred through that OEM to the large end-user. This approach will greatly reduce overhead costs and allow the now idle, or near idle, US company to rapidly return to the market with better margins and enhanced profitability.

To take advantage of such an opportunity the US company needs to find just the right manufacturing partner overseas. This is not as easy as one might think. Foreign business cultures are difficult to navigate absent experience and contacts. When traveling abroad, tourists often are in need of a translator. A company seeking to source foreign manufacturing needs the business equivalent of that translator.

One such company providing that service is Itasca, Illinois-based M-Wave. M-Wave has the contacts and knowledge to create the necessary foreign manufacturing alliances and minimize the risk to the U.S. company.

Join us this coming Wednesday when Jim Mayer, Director at M-Wave, shares his thoughts about the challenges facing US manufacturing today and how they can improve their chances tomorrow.

Curt Gibbs

Investing in America?

If you’re an investor like myself, it’s a good idea to stay informed about the markets, especially in turbulent times like these. What’s hot today can quickly cool tomorrow, so you have to stay on your toes. Many successful investors recommend a two step approach to locating assets that are poised to increase in value. In very general terms, it works like this.

Step one: Observe “trends” and potential “needs” in our society, which I think is very good advice. Let’s face it, investing is really all about predicting the future. If you’re convinced that our societies wants and needs will grow in any one direction, try to get out in front of it. Most obvious examples might be communication equipment and services, medicines for the aging baby boomers, new technology in computer hardware and software to name a few.

Now, once you’ve found a company that is heavily involved in a growing market, then you initiate step two which is:

Step Two: Take a close look under the hood of your selected company and look for physical evidence that they are succeeding and growing. These evaluations involve real hard evidence like profit/loss statements, balance sheets, sales data, operational costs, marketing programs etc. You see, without the physical evidence of a profitable company to back up your assessment of their position in the future, you risk losing everything.

I’ve offered this backdrop to introduce this Thursday’s radio program. Because in November you’re going to have the opportunity and rare privilege two invest in one of two America’s. And the stakes have never been higher for you!

So please join us this Thursday from 4:30 – 5:00 p.m. where I intend to intentionally slow things down a bit on the Curt Gibbs Show w/Davo. And we encourage you to call in and share in our discussion.

Join Dr. Pete, Friday, 10/05 at 11:30 am, as he discusses “STEM Fields” Talent Shortage; How the United States can regain its competitiveness in math- and science-related fields.

The focus of the organization’s leaders is to develop new leaders through early involvement of engineering teams. This means that leaders need to define practices that encourage people to learn, share ideas, and achieve their greatest potential (Musselwhite, 1990). Equally important is for the manufacturing organization to develop training programs that internally create career paths that cultivate and grow its own qualified workforce. This was a lesson identified during the Industrial Revolution of the 1830s. Business limitations and possible failures occur by not investing in modern equipment and human capital. Businesses that do not develop strategies to keep pace with, or stay ahead of new technologies fall short in advancing business markets. The result is lost business market competitiveness, jobs, and the loss of historical knowledge.

leaders need to define practices that encourage people to learn, share ideas, and achieve their greatest potential

The concept of education from manufacturing history encourages a broad-minded knowledge base focused on learning from history to encourage manufacturing process research and training as a strategic means to keep pace with market changes. According to Witzel (2007), the existing literature and actual field experiences from manufacturing lessons, first identified 160 years ago, clearly identify that the U.S. failed to learn from history the need for continued training, which resulted in lost market knowledge and jobs. Companies generally invested in technology and human capital when the business performance is positive and cash is available, not when the need was greatest.

History does repeat itself when the lessons learned are not heeded. Charles Babbage was a British inventor and mathematician credited with inventing the digital computer in the 1800′s. Babbage, educated in Great Britain and a profound thinker, often spoke about the economic perils associated with not investing in manufacturing, design research, and human education. Great Britain ignored Babbage’s insight by not investing, while the emerging economic rivals, the U.S. and Germany, did. The result was that Great Britain wasted their progressive knowledge and lost its global market superiority. Britain’s failure, forecasted by Babbage, occurred because they failed to learn from history. The U.S. repeated this failure by not learning from its history (Howell, 2006), which permitted the negative grip of a poor economy and high unemployment to take hold.

we need Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with United States best interest in mind! FTA that provides the United States manufacturing industry an equal playing field

In the last 50 years, the U.S. poor economy and high unemployment resulted from a combination of factors, such as free trade agreements (FTA), which included government policy changes that affected manufacturing, Currently, the U.S. has FTAs with 15 countries: Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Chile, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Jordan, Mexico, Morocco, Nicaragua Oman, Peru, and Singapore. The seminal research by Robert Scott (2001), while engaged in writing for the Economic Policy Institute, addressed why FTA core principles better supported the 50 years of the strategic industrial growth policies of Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, and China than the U.S. The Asian model simply protected their industries by investing heavily in manufacturing process research, employee education, and subsidizing R&D investment. This strategic industrial growth policy represented the complete opposite of what occurred in the U.S.

The problem is that the U.S. failed to learn lessons from their past pertaining to protecting manufacturing industries, and consequently lost important knowledge and market share. Here we are again, high unemployment, poor unprepared economy, in and modern age of technologic wonder and the U.S. is unprepared, unfocused, and failing to thrive resulting lost its global market superiority…

equally important is for the manufacturing organization to develop training programs that internally create career paths that cultivate and grow its own qualified workforce
