Perspectives on Mergers and Acquisitions with Jim Treleaven

A perfect storm of economic conditions has made acquisition the primary exit strategy for many firms. The general economic slowdown, the slowdown in the IPO market and the buildup of cash in larger firms has significantly accelerated M&A activity in the US and internationally. For the acquiring firms, acquisition is a means to accelerated growth during the economic slowdown and is often the most effective use of cash. For acquisition targets, acquisition is one of the most effective alternatives of all of the possible exit strategies. Today we will discuss the M&A process both before and after the event from the perspective of both the buy and the sell side. Rob Loewer, an attorney and Director of Finance and General Counsel at from National Railway Equipment Company represents the buy side. Stan Stec, a CPA and most recently M&A Integration Operations Executive at IBM represents the sell side.

We all know by now that health-care accounts for more than 17% of the United States GDP and that healthcare costs have grown at a rate substantially higher than inflation. Technology both contributes to and attenuates this cost spiral. Technology most certainly has contributed both to significantly improved healthcare outcomes and to an improved patient experience. Telemedicine allows physicians to discharge patients more quickly and to monitor their medical status remotely. Electronic Health Records (EHRs) allow instant access and portability of vital patient health information. Mobile devices give healthcare providers unprecedented flexibility and access to information. The collection and dissemination of large amounts of clinical data facilitates new avenues of research and significantly improved patient outcomes. And, all of this can help in very real ways to reduce the growth in healthcare costs. Today we’ll discuss some of these innovations and what they portend for the future delivery of healthcare.
