The youngest of my 5 children graduated from high school the weekend before last (Summa Cum Laude & yes, I’m proud!), and with that momentous occasion, it also marked my 13 years of single-parenthood, which seems an unbelievably long time. It also reveals more of my age than I’d like, so for the record, my response to people’s reaction when I tell them I have 5 kids ages 19-29 is that I was a slut in junior high. The math works out much better that way.

Of course I’m kidding.

It is true however, that I married just weeks after turning 20 years old (not because I had to) with very little actual dating experience. When I suddenly found myself single years later, I had a lot to learn about the whacky world of adult dating! I’d seen the Brady Bunch and didn’t buy into the more the merrier idea of a blended family… maybe it was just Robert Reed’s bad perm that kept me from quickly rushing to remarry. Or I might’ve stayed single longer because no one wants a train wreck and I needed to get my own back on track (chugging along just fine now). Or maybe the online and offline dating was just a lot of work.

Comedy and Tragedy Masks of Ancient Greek Drama

Seriuosly, I couldn’t make up half the stuff I encountered. (Actually, as a writer, I could, but no need to–plenty of material out there.)

Debbie Sue Goodman, Comedian, Author, Still Single, Still Dating, & My Husband the Stranger

One thing is certain– having a sense of humor is an absolute survival skill, as our Tamara Leigh’s TREND ON guest, Comedian/Author Debbie Sue Goodman attests to in her books and stand-up comedy schticks, Still Single and Still Dating. With 55 million single Americans, the tragedy and comedy of romance resonates with Debbie’s audiences. Her latest book, My Husband the Stranger takes a more serious look at the disconnect that can happen in marriage. Debbie also offers advice in a dating column in her local Chicago community. Debbies says friends and strangers alike disclose and discuss their personal experiences in this crazy little thing called love.

And speaking of online dating, as I learned from my “unforgivable” online dating mistake, pursuit of love in digital is riddled with it own mishaps. For example, a study conducted by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Cornell University found that 80% of online daters lie.

Shocking! Online daters lie? See now, that’s exactly the kind of dating facts I had to learn the hard way.

Mark Bradford, “Only A Glance” online dating site creator

However, in the online daters defense, it can be awkward to put your own “sticker price” out there and then hope the would-be match doesn’t actually look under the hood. Among the upwards of 40 million people signed on for online dating, there are no doubt a few humorous stories and a common list of dos and donts, like how to post your profile more honestly. Our returning TREND ON guest, Mark Bradford, Creator of Only a Glance, is back with tips to a more straightforward, and truthful way to approach finding love online.

Do you have a dating dilemma, a “I can’t believe it’s not butter” (i.e. the real thing) story from your love life for Debbie or Mark, or do you have a personal challenge an artistic eye like Rae Luskin might be able to help with a little perspective?

Enterprise software is not supposed to be beautiful ???

Beautiful enterprise software? A paradox. Enterprise software is not supposed to be beautiful – bits and bytes are not beautiful, sexy or pleasing. Need it be? After all, technology, in order to do anything useful for us, should effect an action or change in our physical environment; if it achieves that objective why be beautiful? And, practically speaking, we need to build a bridge from the analog world to the digital world.

The bridge, or user interface (UI), is how we people interact with software. It’s a rather utilitarian process, we get the software to do what it was designed for based on the inputs we give it, and we make decisions based on its output. UIs are the least “valuable” part of the process, clearly what is important is the information we put in and what we do with the information that comes out. In computer science speak, we talk of garbage in; garbage out, this refers to the information, who cares how that information gets in or out of the software? Alas, heretofore, most UIs were designed to make that process as painless and as fast as possible, but not beautiful.

Appreciating our very analog and very human affinity for things beautiful, Infor, the world’s third largest enterprise application software company, has a different take on what software can be. It can be beautiful. Infor is serious about this; its design studio, Hook & Loop, was purposely plopped into the heart of NYC’s very fashionable Chelsea district so its software designers are surrounded by and recruited from the designers from art, fashion and theater. Hook & Loop determines nearly every design decision Infor makes, from company logos and marketing campaigns to the user interface and charts that are part of its software.

I have attended hundreds of management presentations and I can’t recall any CEO stressing efforts to make software “beautiful”. Infor defines beautiful software as being beyond “more useable” or “pretty”. Infor believes beautiful software is what drives an exceptional user experience. One question: If beautiful software drives a superior user experience, what is a superior user experience? We all readily recognize it when we feel it, but to design for it? It’s open to debate, but, for now, as far as Infor is concerned, that is for Hook & Loop to determine. I anxiously await its results.

People are always looking to the “Secret” to success, that “Magic Pill” that will transform you into something great! The success you want can be anything; losing weight, growing your business, being a great partner or parent, anything. So, where is that “Magic Key” where do you find it and why is it being hidden from you? They say the greatest place to hide something is right under a person’s nose and that is exactly where the key to your success is. The key to your success, all your success is already inside of you. Every resource and skill you need to be successful; confidence, discipline, hard work and all the others, you are already using in some area of your life, you may not even be aware of it. Once you become aware of those skills in your mind, you can move them over to the other areas of your life to accomplish all you dreams.

Here is an example: I had a client once in her late forties. She came to me because she claimed that all her life she had no confidence or self-esteem. She had been telling herself this all her life. I noticed that when she was telling me her story of despair, she was sitting tall and erect, she was projecting her voice with power and force and her body language was very commanding. She was telling how little confidence she had, very confidently. I told her that and she didn’t want to believe me and she became even more forceful and more sure of her story of no confidence. I had her freeze and look at her body language, her voice and her words. It was the first time in her life that she made the connection to herself, that she really did have self confidence. Once she made that connection all she needed to do was move confidence she had in telling her story to the other areas of her life. She was able to do that and she is now a very successful salesperson and has taken back her power in all the areas of her life.

So how do you capture your powerful success skills you already have and apply them to the other areas of your life? The exercise below will show you how to do that.

Homework Exercise

“Circle of Power”

Close your eyes and remember at time in your life when you were successful doing something (it could be anything) or something that you know you do really well. Now explore it: see the things you see while doing it, hear the things you hear while doing it and feel the things you feel while doing.

Now imagine a circle on the floor in front of you big enough so you can step in it.

Take all the skills, resources and feelings you are experiencing doing this thing you do well (successfully) and take all those things and put them into that circle. You will notice that the circle will change color and you will begin to feel its powerful energy of your success traits coming from it.

Now step into the circle and feel all of your success from that thing you do well. See that way again, hear that way again and feel that way again. You will notice how different you feel. Standing taller, more focused in thought and confident in your ability.

Every time you need your success, power, strength and confidence…Close your eyes imagine that circle in front of you again, it beautiful color and powerful energy and then step into it. You will feel that way again and experience your success….Because….You are Amazing!!!

Being Proactive

Giving personnel access to decision-making tools, contextual data and strategic planning resources also builds the company culture that supports being proactive-rather than reactive. Personnel learn to make decisions independently, thoroughly researching cause-and-effect data and making fact-based decisions. Employees learn that slow response is no longer acceptable. Teams understand that there is no longer an excuse for guessing at historical data, demand trends of taking blame guesses at what customer are wanting. Accuracy, demand planning and forecasting improve, company-wide.

Access to data through the use of technology allows personnel to take an active part in ongoing process improvement. Recent surveys indicate that engaged employees are the most productive and make the greatest contribution.

Sharing information with employees also encourages participation and ownership of role-related data. Access to performance management data gives employees the responsibility of applying the information in order to improve outcomes. The employee becomes motivated to influence key issues and sees the results of such actions. Performance data gives critical ongoing feedback to the employee, reinforcing positive actions.

An engaged employee will be alert to ways to improve efficiency, quality performance or customer satisfaction anywhere in the manufacturing process. Access to performance data helps the employee recognize opportunities, research cause-and effect theories and uncover opportunities where changes can be made to streamline activities, speed delivery time, conserve use of resources or anticipate a customer need.

Personnel must be trained to look for such opportunities, feel motivated to utilize the software capabilities to their fullest advantage and receive positive feedback for taking “above and beyond” actions. Again, access to strategic business intelligence data makes this possible—enabling management to monitor workforce productivity and track trends in performance improvements by individuals or departments.

When it is now possible to maximize productivity, optimize the use of the workforce and be keenly attuned to customer needs and customer expectations through performance management systems, decision-making tools, collaborative environments and enhanced workspaces, a new attitude is fueled within companies one that is not willing to settle for ho-hum performance. Technology enables a proactive mindset for the company and fosters a sense of priority on fast, agile attention to NEW ideas.

       SURVIVAL OF THE FASTEST

Infor says speed is a competitive weapon.

      Why?

We believe that speed—not just scale—is the new basis for competition. It’s no longer about how big a company is; it’s about how fast you can execute. You may never be able to out-scale a competitor, but you can outrun them. Doing something faster than your competition is one of the most important things you can do to stay ahead of the game.

Our goal is to make sure you can move as quickly as possible. Whether it’s being first to market with a new product or providing the fastest delivery in your industry, speed wins.

How does Infor help companies gain speed?

When you look at it, technology has always been a driver of speed. Technology determines the speed at which decisions get made; how responsive your supply chains are; and the rate you get product to market. Technology has also driven an explosion of information and is now changing what we expect in terms of speed and access to information.

Our strategy is founded on three development principles that allow our customers to gain speed.

The first is to build enterprise applications that are deeply specialized by industry. Software that’s designed to solve the specific issues in an industry can be deployed faster and with fewer time-sapping modifications.

The second is to build all our applications on an open, standards-based technology platform called Infor ION. Because Infor ION is based on industry standards, you can plug in Infor applications or third-party applications more easily—it makes your software as agile as your business. But it’s not just about integration. The foundation provided by Infor ION includes business process modeling built right into the core, which means you can quickly change your system to mirror a new or more efficient way of working.

Finally, and most importantly, we are delivering a completely new consumer-grade user experience that fundamentally changes the way people work.

AT the risk of: 1) dating myself; and 2) revealing that “It’s what I don’t know”, I have to say our Guest on last week’s Trend On show, Jesse De Pinto of 3DCreations, llc both inspired and amazed me.

I remember watching reruns of those crazy Jetson’s in their futuristic world of Rosy the Robot and automated gadgets running the home front, as well as visiting Disney World’s Epcot’s Future World — a vision of a someday modern existence of domesticated technology. That Future apparently… is so yesterday.
According to Jesse, “3D printing is not new, so why are people talking about it now?”

Good Question. Even Better Answers came from Jesse in our conversation (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/linkedlocalnetwork/2012/08/15/trend-on).

Jesse is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of 3D Creations–a start-up company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

3D Creations is Milwaukee’s first affordable rapid prototyping service, providing smaller companies with 3D printers, technical support, spare parts & materials. 3DCreations also provides small batch orders for just in time manufacturing.

3D printing can best be described as a machine with the capability of creating actual objects made from layer upon layer of plastic by a computer directive or downloaded image. It’s a little hard to imagine, but think of how a 2D printer puts ink on paper in layers… the 3D printer functions somewhat that same way, as Jesse explains it, only the end result is an actual 3D object, like jelly shoes, chess pieces, dental implants, or mini-architectural models. The possibilities apparently are extensive.

Jesse’s enthusiasm for his company and their product–3D Printers the size of microwave ovens for consumer, small business, and education uses, to name a few–is contagious. Admittedly, Jesse said he could talk about them all day long–& he does so at his store during hours of operation Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 10 am- 2 pm or by appointment–but our Trend On show was unfortunately limited to a half hour.

In that short span of time, one of the most profound statements Jesse made was how 3D Printing will bring manufacturing back to the U.S.A.! “It’s the next big wave in consumer electronics. It’s the most disruptive technology in manufacturing since Henry Ford’s assembly line. It’s the next monumental challenge for copyright,” writes Jesse on the 3DCreations website blog (http://www.3dcreationsllc.com/2012/07/31/what-is-a-3d-printer/).

A second profound potential use of 3D Printing is in the area of actual organ replication and prosthetics — making the Bionic Woman and $6 Million Dollar Man more than fictional throwbacks. Millennial’s like Jesse know the power of such innovation and how consumerism and personal customization, especially of 3D printing, can be successfully leveraged. (They’re also too young to remember any of these pop-culture references… oh wait, they have the internet to Google them like I did. )

It’s all very energizing and exciting… & more than a little Sci-Fi reality.

3D Creations is located in the heart of Milwaukee in the Grand Avenue Mall.

Their Grand Opening is September 4th at 6pm at Innovations in Milwaukee in Grand Avenue Mall located at 161 W. Wisconsin. For more info check out their website at: www.3DCreationsllc.com

It’s a beautiful morning in Breckenridge, Colorado as I write this blog from a busy Starbucks on the Mainstreet of this quintessential Old West Ski town. As the sun warms the crisp Rocky Mountain air, I can’t help but think of a plea my friend Michelle Celestial Easterly Moore posted on Facebook this past week:

Please pray for Jacob Ostreicher. Time is of the essence. He is on a hunger strike. He may not make it.

In the time it takes to make a double shot skinny dirty chai, one action, one prayer on behalf of Jacob could make a difference. And so, like Michelle, I am the messenger, and hoping to inspire any one and every one who collectively might take part in protecting humanity… who might take a moment to act to help this fellow American.

Who is Jacob Ostreicher? Who’s Michelle Moore for that matter?

Jacob Ostreicher is an American citizen , businessman, and family man wrongfully, and inhumanely, imprisoned a year ago in Bolivia by the Evo Morales government.

Michelle Moore, and her husband, retired FBI Agent Steve Moore honored me with their valuable time as my guests on Trend On a few weeks ago. http://www.blogtalkradio.com/linkedlocalnetwork/2012/07/11/trend-on-a-modern-day-caped-crusader-couple

As the Modern Day Caped Crusading Couple, Steve & Michelle Moore became International Super Heroes for their advocacy and intervention in the innocence of American college student Amanda Knox. Amanda and her then boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were convicted, then acquitted, of murdering her English roommate, Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy. Michelle, a wife and mother, friend, compassionate human being,– just happened to catch a late night expose on Amanda’s scandal… and had to act.

Or in Michelle’s words, had to get her husband, Steve–the ex-FBI guy, the career anti-terroist agent, the compassionate father of their own daughters Amanda’s age– to act and investigate the unsettling feeling Michelle had that Amanda and Raffaele were innocent. Steve did so with professional due diligence, and quickly came to the realization and resolve that Amanda and Raffaele were pawns of a malicious local government. They & their families were suffering, like Jacob, and something had to be done.

Amanda’s case got my attention because I too was a mother of young, world traveling, adult children. I also know that in split seconds, life changes and you or your loved ones can find yourself on the wrong side of oppressive political powers. After traveling abroad myself and working with International families for over a decade, I know, as we talked about on the Trend On show, that as Americans, it’s a dangerous mindset to think we carry our U.S. Constitutional Rights with us where ever we go around the globe. Even when doing everything right, like Jacob Ostreicher, we can be wronged.

In America, if we are not vigilant, our Freedom could be equally precarious. Yet if we collectively act on behalf of one, like Jacob or Amanda, we act for all.

A week after the 4th of July 2012, Michelle and Steve spoke with me to the need for a strong, free America. As ambassadors for global humanity, regardless of political positions, Michelle and Steve shared what they learned in the process of speaking out against formidable opposition to be a voice for justice then and now. Steve is currently working with the U.S. State Department, House Foreign Affairs Committee & United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights in the effort to free Jacob Ostreicher. A bill called “Jacob’s Law” is in the works which includes Steve’s input.

For more on this amazing powerful couple, visit Steve’s website: Gman Case File. Com (http://website.gmancasefile.com);
and check out Steve’s new book:
“Special Agent Man: My Life in the FBI as a Terrorist Hunter, Helicopter Pilot, and Certified Sniper”.

Gmancasefile.com also has info on booking Steve as a Speaker, ordering his book “Special Agent Man”, and more on Steve’s Consulting, Expert Commentary in the Media & Technical Advising in the Entertainment Industry.

Or maybe the more effective method to call on the Crusader is to strike a chord with Michelle… she is a special force behind the Gman.

I’m humbled to have such friends– ironically a friendship which came about through another act of compassion and caring on the part of Michelle. Perhaps it is Steve and Michelle’s own humanity, their personal journeys of struggling with career, marriage, cancer, family and faith, that makes them so well-suited to be both the Saved and the Savers.

Either way, they would say — please Pray, please Act. You can make a difference.

Information on Jacob Ostreicher and Steve’s advocacy on his behalf can be found on the PRAYING FOR JACOB OSTREICHER facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/240239232759447/

Steve and Michelle are also involved in helping Jason Puracal, another American wrongly convicted and incarcerated in Nicaragua. More information on Jason’s plight is at: http://freejasonp.com/home/tag/jason-puracal.

Although a Hired Gun is an expression with a connotation of doing some sort of dirty or dubious work, when it comes to ERP, that is, Enterprise Resource Planning, hiring a Big Gun to do objective consulting for your company’s ERP implementation, is worth the investment and more than beats shooting yourself in the foot by not seeking out the outside opinion and expertise.Considering the scope and cost of an ERP implementation, an unbiased ERP consultant can help you identify your company’s requirements and decide if a particular solution will meet them. This ERP Hired Gun should not be the same individual or company as the ones implementing and providing your ERP — they of course have a vested interest in your ERP system and purchase, therefore objectivity would be more difficult (though not necessarily impossible).

It’s also hard for someone within your organization to take on the objective ERP role. Even if your own people are knowledgeable on ERP, it would still be harder for them to be unbiased and/or not influenced by the company’s bottom line or financial objectives.

So the Hired Gun — the Independent ERP consultant — should be the one who is:

* objective
* knowledgeable about all the solutions on your list
* have experience with ERP in your industry.

SMART & SWEET SUITES!

The other value an Independent ERP Hired Gun can help you with is making your ERP implementation Smarter. ERP packages are sold as suites, but you don’t necessarily have to buy them that way. Instead customize your ERP by creating a Sweet ERP Suite tailored to your company needs — purchase just the modules necessary for an optimal ERP system. The modules are integrated as you deploy them whether that’s in the initial installation or several months down the road.

An independent consultant can give you that valuable information and perspective — which makes it money well spent as part of the ERP process.
