Our founding fathers recognized the importance of having citizen politicians. Citizen politicians defined over 237 years ago as people who participate in the political process, and these people come from all walks of life, such as farmers, businesses, law practices, inn keepers, chimney sweepers and schoolteachers.

These citizen politicians participated in the people’s government result in fresh new realist practical ideas from the communities they live in. These ideas coming from the community bringing reality and cultural inspiration based on real world experiences. These citizen politicians representing the people’s government and after their politicking is done they simply travel home to their citizens lives once again.

What is deeply saddening is the evolutionary process of the professional politician, who’s only goal in life is to stay in that elected seat full-time and forever. Without ever relinquishing this position resulting in stagnant ideas, with no possible sense of connection to the real people that elected them. In addition, a lack of connection to any sense of reality at all, these professional politicians are more closely aligned to an elitist mindset nowhere grounded to the community they are supposed to represent.

Political elitists have no direct correlation to the citizens that they represent, in most cases these professional politicians are not even from the same state. The only reason that these professional politicians are there, is because a great deal of money is now made for being a professional politician. Our founding fathers never intended to make citizens full-time politicians, or they would have written term-limits into the constitution for all elected officials from dogcatcher to the president.

Instead, what we have today a professional politician with no real connection back to the community that they represent, and what happens is “we the people” cease to exist.” “We the people” today are no longer the foundation for this government, and we the people have become merely three words in the English language.

If the magic stuff that holds atoms together just stopped, would it get quiet? We live in a world of the unknown; my 90-year-old father-in-law calls life in general a crap shoot; I tend to agree with him. The world as we understand it is made of atoms flying around connected by a magical invisible stuff. This stuff is so powerful that it knows when to hold on and when to let go. Change in our society pretends to work the same way, yet, in reality, we have a difficult time letting go. So change comes slowly, change comes unwelcome as well. I would suspect if the magical stuff that holds atoms together lets go, we would never know it happened. We would simply stop existing, not a massive explosion that one would expect. To go from being here, too not existing at all, nothing must be a quiet place. Being the father of six children it becomes difficult to think in a quiet environment. The quiet would make for an empty life, so many atoms being held tight and letting go with my children. So much commotion by so many different personalities trying to make their points and get their own way. A nice commotion, society could learn from kids. I know I do everyday.

Atoms hold our past and future in a delicate bond of magical stuff. If it suddenly stop holding onto our existence. Would all our accomplishments simply end; nothingness would then become the new reality? Would this nothingness erase all consciousness? Would the consciousness of countess living thinking formed in our old reality combine as one? Could these atoms find some way to join up without the magic stuff? Or would this be a natural reset in the evolution of the cosmos? All would start over once again as something, a new consciousness perhaps, a new level of self… Temporary and so amazing to understand atoms held together by a magical stuff…

“So much magic stuff so little time, waste no moments, listen and live in the commotion, atoms have their own timetable!” Dr. Pete

Many institutions of higher education have developed detailed service programs to boost veteran success in higher education.

What’s missing, and perhaps a barrier for success, is that the key to these programs lies in understanding the student-veteran mindset, which is becoming critical as more student-veterans seek to use their military education benefits.

The 2011 NACADA Journal article “Applying Schlossberg’s Model to Transitioning American Veterans” reports that an increasing number of student-veterans start the higher education journey with unseen injuries such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health issues. These unseen injuries increase the likelihood of lower retention and graduation rates. Student-veterans returning to colleges and universities typically have a higher level of education and a higher level of maturity than the traditional high school graduate because they have a more diverse experience base. This experience base can be an additional barrier that adds to the difficulty of understanding the student-veteran mindset.

Dr. Schlossberg’s study identified the means to overcome such a difficulty by a process that encourages an understanding of the student-veteran’s strengths, needs and challenges as they transition from the military life to the higher education journey.

We Speak A Different Language

Student-veterans are different. We take on life’s tasks as if they represent a mission. We are regimented, task-oriented and focused on the goals. We speak a different language that is easily distinguishable from one veteran to another. We communicate with experience gained from places and events that are both amazing and impossible to describe.

It’s a language that cannot be learned; it can only be earned. It defines our history and the level of trust granted.

Schlossberg’s Transition Model

Schlossberg’s transition model focuses on a series of human interactions that produce a desired result as a means to promote higher education success.

Schlossberg model promote dynamic change that influences the sense of competency which becomes a clear connection between a student-veteran and an institution of higher education. A connection when applied, results in higher retention, degree completion rates and a productive, transitioning American veteran.

Many small manufacturing businesses today resemble what I call an upside-down pyramid. Can you envision such a pyramid attempting to balance on its point? What you have is an impossible balancing act of monumental proportions; near impossible regardless how much money you throw at it! Many manufacturing businesses today, reside in a world managed by tyrannical leadership, with no experienced balanced leadership approaches to speak of at all.

Businesses that grow without investing in a balanced leadership infrastructure result in one person making all the decisions. A manufacturing environment with one person making all the decisions is easy to spot. Walk around the business, you will see people standing around pretending to be busy. The difficult to balance, such as an upside-down pyramid can still work and lead to manufacturing business success. For example, a two to four million-dollar revenue manufacturing business with about 20 employees is manageable with one strong leader. The balancer is physically and emotionally unable to manage every key element of that business with efficiency, such as responding to the business’s needs in a timely manner. The huge “but” here; is this type of leader, does not make decisions based on sound business data? Instead, decisions strictly emotionally based using non-factual data. This is where the term “Pie in Sky” came from a one sided skewed reality. His or her leadership reality rules that day, lending to many looks of bewilderment from their employees.

Emotional base decision making instead of fact-based decision making, results in employees reacting to change by always seeing the glass being half-empty, instead of as being half full. The negative aspect becomes the governing force, the performance influencer promoting counterproductive morale. What you have is the same people standing around waiting for someone to make a decision, now gossiping as well. Gossip is the natural by-product of working inside a tyrannical manufacturing company. Gossip is just as destructive as a tyrannical leader.

The solution is very simple, develop, and implement an evenly balanced business, by allowing your employees to help you do it. Occasionally, you will end up where you don’t want to be, that is acceptable as long as the new business direction results in some sort of positive balanced between business performance and leadership growth. Tyrannical leadership practices can end, by encouraging others to lead; make decisions, and yes occasionally these new people now involved in the decision process, can make mistakes. Mistakes are a positive aspect of change, when you learn from mistakes, and embrace mistakes as gained knowledge, you can now share them with others. The future is looking brighter; the manufacturing leadership business fix has a few essential parts called the Smart-Process:

The smart-process begins with a comprehensive assessment of the business in the current state, exposing its strengths, and exposing its weaknesses. During the assessment phase, the weaknesses of what is perceived to be problems are studied, and targeted, for elimination.

The next component is the change moment, the business as a whole accepts that it must change. The change phase is the cultural aspect of the processes that are going through a makeover of transforming a business from weakness to strength. In the mind of the employees, the change quickly becomes part of the solution.

Next, make sure you have realistic, honest measuring systems in place to determine if the changes are actually creating value for the business, improving that business, and creating sustainable satisfaction for both internal and external customers.

Finally, the full circle, share the leadership responsibilities, invest in many balanced leadership talents; “Leader’s number one responsibility is to make other leaders.” Having many leaders forces the pyramid to stop balancing on its pinnacle, and landing on a pyramid’s widest base, its foundation of strength. For that, reason pyramids can remain standing for eons of time, regardless where they are built.

If a business’s desires to stay in business, this business cannot reside in a world managed by tyrannical leadership, with no balanced leadership approaches to speak of at all. Team based leadership is adaptive, responsive to business market changes; and this team base ability is mandatory for manufacturing survival today.

“STEM Fields” Talent Shortage; How the United States can regain its competitiveness in math- and science-related fields. Career College Central Magazine, September 2012

For the past 100 years, technological innovations in science and engineering have fueled the U.S. economy, produced good jobs and an extraordinary standard of living, and established the United States as an international economic leader. Our nation’s international segment of industries focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), though, is in profound decline, as documented in the “Science and Engineering Indicators: 2012″ study by the National Science Board. The study concludes that STEM education and entrepreneurial thinking has taken a back seat to empirical learning, resulting in a decline in good jobs. “We do not have nearly enough people who are capable in the STEM fields: science, technology, engineering and math,” said Margaret Spellings, former U.S. Secretary of Education from 2005 to 2009.

The U.S. economy relies heavily on jobs resulting from innovation. This makes selecting the means How the United States can regain its competitiveness in math- and science-related fields to ensure the sustained growth of the U.S. economy and job creating industries paramount. Job-creating industries are dependent on the nation’s college graduates being trained to decipher, understand, and identify industry solutions from historical case studies. Case studies correlating to present-day educational obstacles can provide a heads-up display for market changes, diversity of markets, and the ability to adapt to markets with a historical perspective. Having a strong focus on STEM fields reduces the talent shortage and increases learning from past education mistakes.

In the last 20 years, the skills needed for employment have become more technology related. This requires workers to have stronger backgrounds in science and engineering. The U.S. Census Bureau reported that the number of workers in science and engineering occupations grew by nearly 800 percent between 1950 and 2000. Our nation has a thirst for STEM occupations, which is revealed in the lower unemployment statistics of STEM graduates.

Here is the big problem: The cost of waiting for old ideas to catch up with modern job-creation practices obstructs new market opportunities. Such obstructions represent a stream of wasteful practices, making it difficult to be competitive in today’s volatile markets. The loss of competitiveness results in lost work and higher unemployment statistics. According to U.S. Department of Labor information cited in the 2012 CNN Money article “The 86 Million Invisible Unemployed,” 86 million people without jobs have simply given up looking for a job. How do we bring together our combined academic experiences and industry expertise to reverse this serious educational trend? The talent solutions will come from colleges and universities that move quickly to embrace STEM education concepts, neither tolerating nor accepting limits set by bureaucratic regulations. Teachers are ready to make such change. With quick changes to curricula that encourage and promote STEM fields, the value of such an education can inspire students in K-12.

“By taking on teaching and school counselor roles, STEM educated graduates from our nation’s teaching colleges and universities become the compulsory inspiration for our young people.”

New K-12 teachers and school counselors become the natural first line of observation. STEM practitioners become vital to identifying students with a gift for the sciences. The secret sauce is in stimulating learning in students who do not know they have the ability to excel in STEM fields. These students have the strongest probability for success and become future job creators and industry leaders.

Educated teachers and school counselors in STEM can help students develop their own learning experiences and science skill sets. New experiences and skill sets become the bedrock of goal setting early in a student’s educational journey. In the pyramid design, we begin with the foundation of knowledge experienced through the empirical learning of teachers and school counselors.

The modern-day assessment tool that can easily be adapted to test the necessities of K-12 is called the Prior Learning Assessment. PLA is an important strategy for helping students progress toward higher education. Understanding a student’s prior learning is similar to adding a turbine supercharger to a four-cylinder education engine. After reviewing data collected from 62,475 students at 48 postsecondary institutions in a PLA study, the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) shows that PLA students have better academic outcomes.

Climbing higher up the pyramid is a next-level opportunity to stimulate K-12 learning by concentrating on the combined strengths of parent involvement (PI) and interactive methodology (IM). A Need for More Role Models?” in the Journal of College Science Teaching, PI is the ultimate role model.

Students will enjoy learning and be motivated to learn if they are taught by a motivated role model who is of great influence to the student, such as a parent. Teachers and school counselors who encourage PI are more likely to receive the respect of both the student and parents. PI is significant because, as the education process continues, students gain confidence in discussing science with others long after school dismissal in the best learning environment – their homes. The final pyramid step is technology or IM – the ultimate evolutionary process. IM combines every level of technology that is available to the student in the school and home environments. Advancing a student’s sensory ability by using methodology fueled by technology stimulates levels of importance associated with STEM learning. IM becomes the natural byproduct and lowest common denominator linking STEM educators, researchers and students, establishing unlimited inspirational learning. Each level of learning becomes more exciting than the previous.

As seen above, the pyramid design has a foundation in STEM educated teachers and school counselors, who are trained with a robust student assessment process that aims for understanding a student’s prior learning. Including PI and adapting to IM are also vital. Using this model, we have a fighting chance with the benefits of STEM education and entrepreneurial thinking, resulting in a culture prepared to create good jobs.

The focus of the organization’s leaders is to develop new leaders through early involvement of engineering teams. This means that leaders need to define practices that encourage people to learn, share ideas, and achieve their greatest potential (Musselwhite, 1990). Equally important is for the manufacturing organization to develop training programs that internally create career paths that cultivate and grow its own qualified workforce. This was a lesson identified during the Industrial Revolution of the 1830s. Business limitations and possible failures occur by not investing in modern equipment and human capital. Businesses that do not develop strategies to keep pace with, or stay ahead of new technologies fall short in advancing business markets. The result is lost business market competitiveness, jobs, and the loss of historical knowledge.

leaders need to define practices that encourage people to learn, share ideas, and achieve their greatest potential

The concept of education from manufacturing history encourages a broad-minded knowledge base focused on learning from history to encourage manufacturing process research and training as a strategic means to keep pace with market changes. According to Witzel (2007), the existing literature and actual field experiences from manufacturing lessons, first identified 160 years ago, clearly identify that the U.S. failed to learn from history the need for continued training, which resulted in lost market knowledge and jobs. Companies generally invested in technology and human capital when the business performance is positive and cash is available, not when the need was greatest.

History does repeat itself when the lessons learned are not heeded. Charles Babbage was a British inventor and mathematician credited with inventing the digital computer in the 1800′s. Babbage, educated in Great Britain and a profound thinker, often spoke about the economic perils associated with not investing in manufacturing, design research, and human education. Great Britain ignored Babbage’s insight by not investing, while the emerging economic rivals, the U.S. and Germany, did. The result was that Great Britain wasted their progressive knowledge and lost its global market superiority. Britain’s failure, forecasted by Babbage, occurred because they failed to learn from history. The U.S. repeated this failure by not learning from its history (Howell, 2006), which permitted the negative grip of a poor economy and high unemployment to take hold.

we need Free Trade Agreements (FTA) with United States best interest in mind! FTA that provides the United States manufacturing industry an equal playing field

In the last 50 years, the U.S. poor economy and high unemployment resulted from a combination of factors, such as free trade agreements (FTA), which included government policy changes that affected manufacturing, Currently, the U.S. has FTAs with 15 countries: Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Chile, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Israel, Jordan, Mexico, Morocco, Nicaragua Oman, Peru, and Singapore. The seminal research by Robert Scott (2001), while engaged in writing for the Economic Policy Institute, addressed why FTA core principles better supported the 50 years of the strategic industrial growth policies of Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, and China than the U.S. The Asian model simply protected their industries by investing heavily in manufacturing process research, employee education, and subsidizing R&D investment. This strategic industrial growth policy represented the complete opposite of what occurred in the U.S.

The problem is that the U.S. failed to learn lessons from their past pertaining to protecting manufacturing industries, and consequently lost important knowledge and market share. Here we are again, high unemployment, poor unprepared economy, in and modern age of technologic wonder and the U.S. is unprepared, unfocused, and failing to thrive resulting lost its global market superiority…

equally important is for the manufacturing organization to develop training programs that internally create career paths that cultivate and grow its own qualified workforce

The summit is a collaboration between the Illinois Institute of Technology and local technology professionals.

After seeing strong attendance for the inaugural event in 2011, the Technology Innovation Summit is again bringing together government technology executives, technology leaders and business innovation experts to discuss how IT and other technologies can be adopted by governments and how their utilization can spur economic development.

“This summit is designed to spur discussion among the main stakeholders in local government tech. It came about because of the challenges that several municipal technology managers shared with me. Our goal is to connect governments and vendors and help them design effective projects by highlighting best practices.”

This year’s event will include discussions of mobility, data consolidation, data security and cloud computing. The already confirmed speakers include international technology experts and business executives.

“Many local governments are starting to look at technology implementation as a way of saving money, but they also need to realize that technology infrastructure can improve their communities and make them more adaptable to the changing demographics of the region. The 25-point plan published in 2010 by Vivek Kundra, then the U.S. CTO, has really helped drive attention to government technology initiatives,” said Poonam G. Krishnan, Chairperson of the Technology Innovation Summit.

The Technology Innovation Summit (TI Summit), based in Chicago, IL, is a technology event geared toward local government. It draws attendees and participants from across Illinois and is anchored by close collaboration with the Illinois Institute of Technology.
